Re is situated approximately 700 metres above sea level, and is the last town in the Vigezzo valley before the Swiss border about 7 km away. Besides the main settlement spread out around the sanctuary, on the left bank of the Melezzo torrent there are several other hamlets at different heights. The Ponte Ribellasca quarter is situated on the frontier with Italy.

Travelling from west to east on the SS337, after you leave the town of Re behind the valley narrows and could almost be called a gorge. After roughly one kilometre you come to the hamlet of Meis, with just a few inhabitants in winter; facing the hamlet to the south lies the imposing figure of a sleeping rocky giant – Mount Gridone.

The surrounding mountains are covered in beech and pine woods, which at the right time of year will be teaming with mushroom hunters; the woods are interspersed with meadows at intervals, where hay is still cut to this day using traditional methods, to be carried away on the haymaker’s back in a pannier.
